India wins the 2011 cricket world cup after defeating their asian conterpart Sri Lanka by 6 wickets. Captain M S Dhoni led from the front during India's chase of 275, to give the country their 2nd world cup title after a long wait of 28 years. Sri Lanka , led by wicket keeper captain Kumara Sangakkara earlier won the toss and elected to bat first on a pitch which had very little for the bowlers.
A cautious start by Lankan openers and some firy bowling from Indian pacer Zaheer Khan made sure that Lankans were not off to a flying start. What was more jubilent to watch was the way the Indians fielded. Not renowed for their fielding exploits, the men in blue headed by the likes of Suresh Raina, Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh were all over the field saving 1s and putting up the pressure on the opposition. Even the 37 year old veteran Sachin Tendulkar was seen throwing himself to save a boundary in the outfield!!
A near perfect inninigs from Mahela Jayawardane who made an unbeaten century took Sri Lanka to a challenging totall of 274. The Indian openers comprising of Verinder Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar were out cheaply, but steady innings from Gautam Gambhir together with the captain M S Dhoni's unforgattable innings insured an easy run chase in the end in the 49th over.It was for the first time in cricket world cup history that the host nation winning the title.
